Private Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET)

An assessment of your heart and lung function

A CPET tests how well your heart and lungs work during exercise by monitoring heart rate, blood pressure and breathing

what is a CPET?

A cardiopulmonary exercise test is designed to measure how your heart and lungs respond to exercise.

During the test, we'll monitor your heart rate and blood pressure, along with your oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output while you cycle on a stationary bicycle.

Special sensors will be attached to your chest using small sticky pads. These sensors are connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG) recording machine to track the electrical signals that make your heart beat. Your blood pressure will also be monitored and you'll be fitted with a special face mask, which measures your oxygen and carbon dioxide levels as you breathe.

The test involves pedalling on a special stationary exercise bike. You'll start out at a slow speed and gradually increase the speed and resistance. You'll be asked to you push yourself to the best of your ability during the test, which lasts around 15 minutes.
  • How to prepare icon plus

Your consultant will explain the test to you and answer any questions you may have. They'll let you know if there is anything specific you need to do to prepare. This may include avoiding caffeine and certain medications before your test. You'll also need to wear comfortable clothes appropriate for exercise.

The test itself isn't painful, but you may feel tired afterwards. Your consultant will discuss your test results with you and let you know any next steps, including further health assessments if needed.
