About knee pain

If you have pain, discomfort, swelling or restricted movement in your knee, it can affect every aspect of your day-to-day life. Our knee specialists are here to help diagnose a wide range of injuries and conditions, and offer the best treatment options for you.

Need to know

  • What are the symptoms of knee pain? icon plus

The symptoms and level of pain or discomfort you may feel can vary according to the type of injury or condition you have. Pain between your kneecap and your shin may be a sign of tendonitis. Stiffness, swelling and a feeling of warmth may be more associated with arthritis.

If it's unstable or gives way suddenly, you could have damage to your knee cartilage or ligaments. In all cases, we recommend a detailed examination and assessment with your consultant.

  • How is a knee condition diagnosed? icon plus

Your consultant will usually start by asking you to describe your knee pain, when it started and how severe it is. Following a physical examination, you may have one or more tests such as an X-ray or MRI scan. Certain possible causes of knee pain may require further tests such as a biomechanical assessment. Your consultant can discuss these with you at the time.
  • Potential treatment options icon plus

Our knee specialists can offer various surgical and non-surgical treatments, depending on your condition and how much damage they find in your joint. Your consultant will discuss this with you.

Our service extends across many disciplines to ensure you always benefit from the best treatment. To complement our medical and surgical care, we also offer physiotherapy and occupational therapy to help your recovery and rehabilitation.
