About

Mr. Jonathan J.R. Richardson, an experienced Colorectal and General Surgeon, practices in the West Midlands of England.

Graduating with honours in surgery from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2005, Mr. Richardson excelled as a junior doctor and secured a prestigious run-through surgical training position. He received comprehensive training in general surgery and sub-speciality colorectal surgery across the West Midlands.

Mr. Richardson's clinical interests span the spectrum of colorectal and general surgery but he has a significant focus on colorectal cancer management and utilises laparoscopic (minimally invasive / key-hole) surgical techniques. He also holds the position of Audit Lead for the Surgical Directorate, striving for optimal patient outcomes.

As Chief Investigator of a translational research study, Mr. Richardson successfully characterised systemic neutrophil function in patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection. His research garnered international recognition, earning him the prestigious European Society for Surgical Research Best Clinical Research Award. Mr. Richardson holds an MD from the University of Birmingham, with his research published in peer-reviewed medical journals and receiving multiple citations.

In his Consultant role, Mr. Richardson is deeply involved in clinical research, serving as Principal Investigator and Co-investigator of multiple NIHR portfolio studies. Additionally, he contributes extensively to the surgical academic literature through publications and presentations on various colorectal and general surgical conditions.

Mr. Richardson is highly experienced in organising and delivering medical education for Medical Students, Junior Doctors, and allied health specialties. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from The University of Dundee. Currently, he serves as the Lead Undergraduate Surgical Tutor and a Senior Clinical Examiner at the University of Birmingham, and holds an appointment as an Honorary Senior Lecturer. Accredited as a GMC Named Educational Supervisor, Mr. Richardson provides educational supervision for Foundation Year Doctors, Specialty Trainees, and Specialist Registrars. He also serves as the Faculty Lead for the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills course and is on the teaching faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient course.

Outside of his professional commitments, Mr. Richardson enjoys a fulfilling family life with his wife and six children in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands.
