After qualifying from St Bartholomew’s hospital in 1971, Peter Rhys-Evans trained in ENT / Head and Neck and reconstructive surgery before spending a year 1980-1981 doing a postgraduate degree in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery at the University of Paris while a resident ENT surgeon at Gustave Roussy Institute, Paris.

In 1981 he was appointed Consultant ENT Surgeon at the Birmingham University Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and in 1986 was invited to take on the post of Chief of ENT / Head & Neck Surgery at The Royal Marsden Hospital. He gave up his NHS sessions in 2017 and now does private consultations and surgery. He is on the staff at the Lister Hospital, the Cromwell Hospital, the Harley Street Clinic and Harley Street Clinic Children’s Hospitals, where he does general and paediatric ENT and thyroid surgery.

His special interests are in voice, throat and swallowing problems, sinus and nasal conditions, thyroid and salivary gland disease, including benign and malignant tumours.

With over 250 scientific publications, including four books, he has been an active contributor to the specialty. His award-winning textbook Principles and Practice of Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology, published 2003 with a second edition in 2009, won a prestigious prize from the University of London for the ‘best international publication in Otolaryngology’ during the preceding five years. His valued reputation in his speciality is reflected in his membership of international societies and committees, and in presenting over 320 major lectures in 26 different countries. He has been listed in the UK Good Doctor Guide since 1994. He delivered the prestigious 2017 Royal College of Surgeons Arris & Gale lecture on a new controversial theory of early human evolution, a research interest since the 1980s. His new book: ‘The Waterside Ape – An Alternative Account of Human Evolution’ is to be published later in 2018.

Peter Rhys-Evans is Founder and Executive Chairman of Oracle Cancer Trust, which is now the largest charity in the UK raising funds for head and neck cancer research. Since 2001 he has been responsible for raising over £6 million and, with his colleagues, for establishing a very active research programme.
