    Mr Jonathan Lucas qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London University in 1988. He underwent basic Surgical Training on the St Bartholomew’s Senior House Officer rotation, gaining the FRCS (Eng) in 1992. He underwent Orthopaedic Training on the South-East Higher Orthopaedic Training Program out of Guys, Kings and St Thomas’ (GKT) gaining the FRCS (Orth&Tr) in 1998 and becoming accredited on the Orthopaedic and Specialist Register in 1998. Mr Lucas specialized in Spinal Surgery with a 14-month Spinal Fellowship at the Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and a British Orthopaedic Travelling Fellowship to the USA.

    He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon to the Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 1999. Mr Lucas provided an adult spinal degenerative, sepsis, tumour and trauma and a paediatric spinal deformity service for 18 years, but has now progressively further specialized in paediatric spinal deformity surgery with his present practice being 80% paediatric and 20% adult spinal surgery.

    Mr Lucas was Lead Clinician for Spinal Surgery for Guys and St Thomas from 2009 to 2018, becoming Head of Service for Paediatric Spinal Surgery for the Evelina London Children’s Hospital in 2019 subsequently appointed Head of Service for Paediatric Orthopaedic at the beginning of 2020.

    Mr Lucas is widely published in the subject of Spinal Surgery. He is a national and international teacher in the subject and is an active participant in clinic research in paediatric spinal surgery and specifically in the minimization of peri and post-operative complications and optimization in outcomes.

    He is author of over 80 peer reviewed publications, abstracts and presentations and contributor to 7 books on Sarcomas of Soft Tissue and Bone and Spinal Trauma. He is the editor of a major surgical text book, New Aird’s Companion to Surgery and pursues a research interest within spinal surgery focusing on the management of paediatric spinal deformity and the surgical management of spinal metastases.

    Mr Lucas was Principal Investigator in the following research projects: NHS Executive South Thames, Research and Development Directorate (February 1997) as well as Wishbone Trust, British Orthopaedic Association (December 1996).

    He is dedicated to the practice of spinal surgery specifically paediatric spinal deformity surgery to producing the best outcomes for his patients.

    During his medical career Mr Lucas received the following awards:
