About

  • Biography icon plus

Dr. Smith is a Consultant Cardiologist at the London Chest Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust) and Royal Free Foundation Trust. He qualified as a doctor in 1994 from Guys and St Thomas"s, and trained in Cardiology at the Manchester Heart Centre and the London Chest Hospital. He became a Consultant in 2008.

His specialist area of interest is in the investigation and management of coronary artery disease. He is an interventional cardiologist with expertise in coronary angioplasty and stenting. He has a particular interest in complex techniques including rotational atherectomy and treating challenging longstanding artery blockages (chronic total occlusions – "CTOs"). He leads the CTO programme at the London Chest Hospital (LCH), and is a European Trainer for CTO procedures. He is committed to ensure access of all suitable patients to revascularisation where appropriate, and believes there remain significant areas where this need is as yet unmet.

He is actively involved in research into new technologies, CTO treatment, and percutaneous cardiac support. He is a Director of the Cardiovascular Training Institute (CVTI) at Barts Health NHS Trust, a dedicated facility delivering practical skills training in invasive and interventional cardiology. He has developed simulator training programmes and courses for future specialists, and regularly participates in live case demonstrations to colleagues nationally and internationally.
