    Dr. Charlotte Manisty has a proven track record as a dedicated and experienced clinical and academic cardiologist with a sub-speciality interest in heart failure and advanced cardiac imaging.

    Based at UCLH and Barts Health NHS Trusts, her clinical practice includes all aspects of adult cardiology, but her subspecialist interests are in heart failure and advanced cardiovascular imaging (cardiac MRI and echocardiography). She set up and leads the specialist Cardio-oncology service at Barts Hospital to assess and treat cancer patients with heart problems. She has developed a service for MRI scanning patients with cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators, and co-authored the national recommendations for MRI imaging in patients with implantable cardiac devices.

    She sees patients routinely in clinic for a range of cardiac conditions including heart failure (shortness of breath and ankle swelling), valvular heart disease and heart murmurs, cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), myocarditis, angina and coronary artery disease (chest pain), high blood pressure, palpitations and pre-operative risk assessment.

    She is recognised by patients for her sound clinical judgement and her conscientious, calm and cheerful approach, and combines her clinical and academic work with raising a family.

    Her medical training was undertaken at Oxford University and Imperial College, and was awarded scholarships at both institutions (including the Cheadle Award, Nuffield and Harmsworth Scholarships). She obtained her MRCP in 2004 and then undertook specialist postgraduate training in Cardiology on the North West Thames rotation. This included Fellowships in Cardiac Imaging and Cardiac Devices at Imperial College NHS Trust (St. Mary’s and the Hammersmith Hospitals). During this period she gained formal accreditation in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography (BSE), cardiac MRI (SCMR level III) and cardiac devices (IBHRE).

    Following her PhD she was received a prestigious National Institute of Health Research Clinical Lecturership, and conducted research into methods to improve the accuracy of echocardiography and myocardial perfusion cardiac MRI scanning, and has received both National and International awards for her work thus far (Society of Cardiac MRI, British Society of Cardiac MRI, British Hypertension Society, National Heart and Lung Institute and President’s Medal for Cardiology at the Royal Society of Medicine).

    She is currently employed as a Senior Lecturer at University College London, and is leads the academic heart failure program at Barts Heart Centre. Current research interests include optimising imaging acquisition and analysis methods for identifying patients at risk of developing heart failure, using MRI-based scar imaging to improve ablation in patients with ventricular arrhythmias, and understanding and treating patients with cardiac problems arising from cancer therapies. She has also completed a study commissioned by the Medicines and Health Regulatory Authority to assess the risk of cardiotoxicity related to metal-on-metal hip implants.

    She receives funding for her work from British Heart Foundation, Barts Charity and the National Institute for Health Research, and supervises several PhD students. She is author of over 60 publications and book chapters, and is regularly invited to speak both Nationally and at International conferences.
