Transparency under the CMA Order 2014
All private healthcare operators are required under the Competition and Markets Authority Order 2014 (“The CMA Order”) to be transparent about the relationship between their doctor and the private healthcare operator. Therefore, prospective patients should be aware that (in addition to being permitted to consult with and to treat patients at our facilities) this doctor also has an advisory role with HCA UK and is paid by HCA UK for this advisory role. We describe the nature of the role below, and we indicate how much the doctor has been paid for performing the role since 1 January 2023.
Dr Harrison is Medical Governance Diretor for HCA UK.
In this role, he advises HCA leadership on matters relating to medical practice across HCA UK as the need arises. He acts as a liaison point for doctors working at the hospitals, especially in raising issues of a clinical nature (including matters relating to patient and practitioner safety).
in this role, Dr Harrison may provide advice in relation to clinical complaints received by HCA UK, including helping to investigate and respond to investigations involving the General Medical Council or the Care Quality Commission. A key part of the role is to offer their professional assistance, advice and guidance to consultants on any areas of their practice that may be giving rise to concern.
Additionally, Dr Harrison is Medical Governance Lead for The London Bridge Hospital.
Medical Governance Leads are esteemed medical practitioners who know the relevant hospital well. They advise the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer on matters relating to medical governance at the hospital as the need arises. They support the work of the facility’s Medical Director.
Because of the breadth of the role and the unique specialisms and practices of each HCA hospital, it is not possible to describe neatly all the functions of a Medical Governance Lead, but they typically include the following: ensuring timely and accurate reporting of events and routine statistics to the hospital’s clinical governance boards and committees; advising on the development of new clinical policies and reviewing existing policies; reviewing the performance of other doctors at the hospital as part of the regular process of renewing practising privileges; providing an independent view on treatment outcomes by doctors including establishing a comprehensive audit of treatment outcomes; and championing clinical audit activities ensuring that outcomes are properly applied and linked to evaluation of services and service improvement.
This doctor provides expertise and advice to HCA, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care. In 2023 the total paid for these services was £290,936.
Dr Harrison is a member of The London Liver Centre, which comprises some of London’s top liver physicians and surgeons, offering our patients extensive global experience in treating conditions of the liver.
Supported by experienced liver specialist nursing staff and the very latest in technology, the team from the London Liver Centre offers a portfolio of excellence in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, Hepatology, Live Living Donor Liver Transplantation and Liver Transplantation.
They provide a comprehensive clinical programme with an integrated investigation and treatment service covering every possible type of acute and chronic liver disease. Both routine and emergency cases are accepted – as both inpatients and outpatient – for liver transplantation, liver and pancreatic intensive care and general hepatology (including treatment for both hepatitis B and C virus infections).
This group of doctors and surgeons provide medical advisory services for HCA's London Bridge Hospital; particularly in relation to liver transplant services. In their role, they lead interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promote high quality, cost effective care.
In their role, they contribute to the strategy, policies and decision making regarding liver transplant services and advise HCA to ensure that care provided within the facility is appropriate and efficient. In their role, they advise on initiatives to drive clinical standards by providing professional advice on clinical governance matters and ensuring the adoption of those by colleagues in the liver transplant services area.
In addition, they work with medical insurance companies, GPs, other relevant local NHS contacts, and patients to educate and advise on relevant clinical updates to treatments in liver transplant services available in the facility. Furthermore, they advise on the accuracy of literature that may be published regarding relevant services. They will also advise on how to make the patient referral smooth to reduce stress and anxiety for patients.
HCA UK is charged by doctors in return for their expertise and advice, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care. All services provided under this agreement are charged to HCA UK. In 2023 the total paid for these services to this group of six doctors was £186,249.
