GI Cancer

Complex GI Centre

Which patients can benefit?

We treat a wide range of patients who have locally advanced primary colorectal and anal cancers. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Patients with recurrent cancer
  • Patients with established peritoneal disease
  • Patients with intra-abdominal peritoneal metastatic disease

Examples of treatments and procedures

  • Multidisciplinary team management of surgery

Our consultants work in multidisciplinary teams (MDTs). This means your patient benefits from the combined experience of a whole team, with expertise in surgical colorectal oncology, orthopaedics, vascular surgery, urology and plastic surgery.

  • Pelvic exenteration surgery

For patients with persistent and recurrent pelvic cancer, this surgery can extend life and relieve pain. It involves removing the inside of the pelvic cavity, including the internal reproductive organs, bladder, lower bowel and rectum, plus the urinary, gastrointestinal and gynaecologic organs.

  • Hyperthermic Intra-Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

In some cases, colorectal cancer can spread to the surface of the abdominal cavity, the peritoneum. HIPEC is an innovative treatment that has proved more effective than traditional treatments for some patients.

  • Multivisceral resection surgery for advanced disease

Sometimes, in order to achieve complete removal of a cancerous tumour, the removal or resection of surrounding organs or structures may be required. This intraoperative decision can prove life-saving.
