Functional Gut

Complex GI Centre

Which patients can benefit?

We treat a wide range of patients with complex functional gut disorders, visceral hypersensitivity and autonomic neuropathies. This includes, but is not limited to, patients presenting with:
  • Severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Motility disorders such as achalasia and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction
  • Gut symptoms in patients with rheumatological conditions, diabetes and neurological disorders

Examples of treatments and procedures

  • Gastrointestinal physiological measurements

Your patient will have full access to the most clinically appropriate diagnostic tests, including: oesophageal manometry, pH and impedance measures, hydrogen and methane breath testing, and barostat measurement of rectal compliance.

  • Anorectal manometry

This safe, low-risk and non-invasive procedure allows our consultants to test the function of the rectal and anal muscles. It helps them to evaluate the muscle pressure and neural reflexes vital for normal bowel movements.

  • Endoanal ultrasound

An endoanal ultrasound is used to evaluate trauma to the sphincter (for example from childbirth or post-surgery). It can also help to identify abnormal thinning of an intact internal sphincter, a condition associated with incontinence.

  • Pelvic floor scanning

A scan of the pelvic floor can assist in the diagnosis of GI pelvic diseases including, but not limited to, appendicitis, diverticulitis, colitis, bowel obstruction, Crohn’s disease, and GI malignancy.

Why us?

Disorders that prohibit normal gut function can often be a series of unique conditions, and not easily identified through normal diagnostic testing.

Managed by internationally recognised consultants, our specialists are leaders in their field. Working together in multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities, they are continually developing cutting-edge techniques for the treatment and management of gut function disorders. Meanwhile, their clinical, diagnostic and technical expertise ensure the highest standard of surgical care for your patient.
