Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
Complex GI Centre
Which patients can benefit?
We treat patients with post-GI surgery incisional hernias and those who have complex abdominal wall defects in need of anterior component separation and posterior component separation (ACS/PCS) repair. This includes, but is not limited to:- Loss of domain hernias
- Gastrointestinal (GI) fistulas
- Recurrent incisional hernias
Examples of treatments and procedures
-
Component separation/Chemical component separation
A procedure in which parts of the abdominal wall are cut to allow for the movement of separate muscle sections during repair. Chemical Component Separation involves applying Botox to help in the surgical repair of complex hernias.
-
Transversus abdominis release (TAR)
TAR provides a long-lasting, dependable answer to incisional hernias, and is the only technique to treat them at source. Evidence suggests it also reduces the risk of recurrent hernias and wound morbidity.
-
External oblique release (EOR)
EOR is a technique used during hernia repair. Carried out endoscopically, it reduces the rate of recurrent hernias and wound complications associated with ventral and incisional hernia repairs.
