Physiotherapy focuses on the musculoskeletal system and helps to restore movement and function in your body, when you are experiencing pain or movement problems. Physiotherapists take a holistic approach to strengthen and retrain your body, whilst supporting you in directly managing your own care. Treatments for pain can include, massage, muscle manipulation, exercises and pain education, which can all help to support the damaged part of your body and prevent the problem reoccurring. Strengthening supporting muscles and teaching muscles to relax can increase movement and flexibility.

You should seek advice from a physio, whether your pain is intense, or a constant niggle, and you experience any or some of the following: • You don’t feel as flexible, or movement isn’t as easy as it used to be, for example you can’t touch your toes any more • You’re in constant pain after an injury has occurred and the pain hasn’t settled down • You get regular or constant pain whilst working at your desk or repeating an action or activity • You’re over 65 and feel you have lost some mobility or are less stable on your feet • You participate in sport and what to improve your muscle conditioning or prevent injury.

Our physiotherapist will access your movement and function, to understand what causes your pain and how it triggers as you move. Once you have been assessed the physiotherapist will be able to discuss what options are available to help improve your movement and reduce your pain. This may include undertaking a series of physio sessions, referral to your GP for a scan, referral to an orthopaedic consultant for further investigation.

GPs offer a general service, which is great for triaging any illness or injuries, however in many cases they are not dedicated to diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries or rehabilitating muscles after an injury. Physiotherapists are trained in diagnosing musculoskeletal problems and undergo regular training to maintain and improve their knowledge of diagnosing and treating different long term, or short term musculoskeletal conditions. There are times however when you should see your GP instead of a physio, such as after a severe injury whereby an X-ray or MRI may be needed to rule out a fracture or a break, or the skin in broken when the injury occurred.
