Arriving for surgery

Travelling to hospital

For everyone’s safety, we are requesting patients to be driven to hospital by a member of their household - or themselves if they are able to.

Pre registration

Prior to your admission you will need to complete a pre registration form, this may be completed online or over the telephone.

Before your surgery

We will email your admissions pack to you ahead of your surgery, and your consultant will also provide you with specific instructions to prepare for your surgery, such as fasting guidance and medication you may need to bring with you.

You and your household will be required to isolate for a period of time prior to your surgery. You will also be required to have a COVID-19 swab test before your surgery. The clinical team will discuss this with you.

Pre-assessment

If you are having a procedure, you may need to undergo a pre-operative assessment. This will either be completed on the telephone with one of our nursing teams, or via an online pre-assessment form. This assessment provides us with the opportunity to identify and manage any other issues you may be dealing with that could arise around and during your procedure.

Following the outcome of your pre-assessment, you may need to come into hospital for further tests prior to surgery.

Visitors

To minimise the number of people within our hospitals, patients are not currently permitted visitors unless in extenuating circumstances.

However, we have introduced a virtual visiting service for patients and their loved ones. While you are unable to receive visitors, we want you to feel as connected as possible to your loved ones. Our concierge team offers a complimentary virtual visiting service for all inpatients using a secure, easy to use video conferencing system. We also have free Wi-Fi at all our facilities.

We’ll arrange everything with your next of kin, and deliver an iPad to your bedroom before your virtual visit is about to start so that you don’t need to worry about logging in.

Your virtual visit can be arranged with as many people as you would like. To find out more, please email contact@hcahealthcare.co.uk or, you can dial 0 from your hospital room whilst you’re staying with us and our concierge team will arrange your virtual visit with you.

Exceptions to our visitor policy

In the following circumstances, we will make every effort to accommodate visitors:

  • Parents or guardians visiting their children
  • Birthing partners
  • Visitors to patients in a critical condition and those receiving end of life care
  • Patient advocates who have power of attorney to make decisions on their behalf

When arriving at hospital, we will screen visitors to assess their risk level so we are able to continue to maintain a safe environment.
