As the only fully private maternity hospital in the UK, we at The Portland Hospital place great emphasis on safety and high-quality care, ensuring mothers-to-be have the most positive and memorable pregnancy possible. 

With more than 1,400 deliveries a year, we put women at the centre of their own maternity experience, offering both midwife-led and consultant-led care, and the full range of birthing options to enable you to develop your own birth plan. 

Specialist care is provided in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and we provide a range of antenatal and postnatal classes for you and your partner, as well as exercise classes to help maintain general fitness and further prepare your body for giving birth. If you're looking for added reassurance during early pregnancy, we offer a range of ultrasound scans and antenatal screening tests to give you piece of mind at this exciting time in your life. 

Our dedicated team of specialist sonographers and consultants will provide you with personalised care, addressing any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing, and helping you and your partner to make informed decisions about the next stages of your pregnancy.

Physiotherapy 

The Women’s Health Physiotherapy Unit at The Portland Hospital offers highly-specialised, one-to-one assessment and treatment for a variety of conditions, including musculoskeletal, bladder, bowel and pelvic problems, to help you through your pregnancy. 

Our range of services extends beyond the delivery of your baby, with our leading yoga and Pilates teachers offering classes to new mums, as well as providing expert advice on the best ways to stay mobile and active after birth.

Antenatal and postnatal classes

Our bespoke antenatal and postnatal classes at The Portland are both communal and educational, with the aim of contributing to a positive birthing experience for you and your partner. These also give you the opportunity to share your experiences with other parents-to-be.


We offer a wide range of classes and tips on caring for your baby. We also provide exercise classes to help maintain general fitness during pregnancy.

Pain relief

We understand that pregnancy and the process of giving birth is different for every mother. This is why all forms of pain relief are available at The Portland Hospital, including the use of a birthing pool, hypnobirthing and epidural.

 

When you are staying with us you can rest assured we have a dedicated, resident consultant anaesthetist on the labour ward 24 hours a day to offer epidural and other types of pain relief. The consultant anaesthetist is also instantly available should you require an emergency caesarean section.
