About rehabilitation

At HCA Healthcare UK we have the largest private hospital-based rehabilitation centre in the country, located in St John's Wood at The Wellington Hospital. The centre is CARF accredited, and has over 60 rooms designed especially for neurological rehabilitation for patients aged over 18. In a separate centre at The Portland Hospital, we offer paediatric rehabilitation.

Both centres work with a range of neurological conditions including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Guillian-Barre syndrome.

We aim to help patients achieve optimal recovery and well-being through a personalised rehabilitation programme, tailored to support the individual and their family. Each rehabilitation centre is supported by an intensive care unit and state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment on-site to give full support to patients who need complex inpatient rehabilitation.

Clinical expertise in rehabilitation

Our consultants are at the forefront of medicine in neurological rehabilitation.

Rehab Unit Care

Multidisciplinary team care

Each of our rehabilitation centres at The Wellington and The Portland Hospital benefit from the expertise of multidisciplinary teams (MDT). This ensures we are able to offer our patients the full breadth of services required to assist with their road to recovery.

With consultants, clinical nurses and support staff specialising in areas as wide-ranging as neurophysiotherapy, neuropsychology, speech, language and music therapy, and with access to leading dieticians and occupational therapists, we are perfectly placed to tailor rehabilitation care to the needs of each individual patient.

Very good – especially the pre-meeting when everything was explained. Very happy that my relatives were included pre-admission and considered when arranging transfer

Caring for you and your family

Having your family nearby and involved in your physical rehabilitation is fundamental, which is why we always involve your family in everything, from our case conference with your clinical team, to ensuring they have a place to stay when you are with us.

We treat patients from across the UK and overseas, and fully understand staying in hospital can be an anxious time. This is why we surround you with an experienced team to support you and your family throughout your rehabilitation with us. Our hospitals have dedicated family rooms, prayer rooms and interpreters.

Our inpatient rehabilitation programmes

Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness Unit (PDOC)

After a severe brain injury, conscious awareness of self and environment can be reduced, only returning in stages. We can treat this condition in our fully equipped intensive care unit.

Functional Restoration Programme (FPR)

Our FRP team provides interdisciplinary assessment and treatment for patients with longstanding pain, helping to restore function in everyday activities. We work closely with patients to put together a personalised programme of care for them.

Specialised Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Programme

We treat complex spinal dysfunction, whether from traumatic injury, malignant and non-malignant tumours, or degenerative spinal disease. We’re also able to help with the assessment and management of neuropathic pain, fatigue and dysfunction.

Integrated outpatient therapy services

Our rehabilitation centre offers a wide range of therapy services on an outpatient basis, supporting each patient as they transition to the next stage of their recovery.

Programmes are tailored to newly-diagnosed patients, and those needing long-term care, offering specialist neurological assessment and regular therapy in a gym environment.

Our specialist therapies include a dizziness and balance service, a concussion clinic, music therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, neuro-physiotherapy and neuro, clinical and health psychology services. We also have a team of dietitians, who provide dietary advice and support on nutrition, including artificial feeding methods and nasogastric tube feeding.

Paediatric rehabilitation

The Portland Hospital offers rehabilitation programmes to help every child achieve their full potential and lead a full and happy life.

The centre is situated within The Portland Hospital, giving on-site access to a range of acute children’s services, including specialist consultants, the latest diagnostic technology, a 10-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, and medical and surgical treatments. The centre treats children of all ages, from babies up to the age of 18, on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Each rehabilitation programme is tailored to the individual child’s needs, and ensures the parents and family are fully involved throughout. The programmes cover a wide range of neurological conditions and complex disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, developmental delay and rehabilitation following complex surgery.
