Spondylodesis

A procedure to reduce chronic spinal pain caused by a degenerative disc

About

Spinal fusion is a type of surgery to weld together two or more vertebrae. Vertebrae are the bones that make up the spine. There are several types of spinal fusion surgery. We offer a revolutionary alternative to conventional spinal fusion surgery called cervical and lumbar disc replacement surgery.

Need to know

  • What happens icon plus

The procedure will reduce your spinal pain by relieving the pressure on the spinal cord that results from a disc wearing out.

In cervical and lumbar disc replacement surgery, the surgeon will replace the degenerative disc with an artificial disc in order to regain your natural flexibility and shock absorption.

Before the operation, your surgeon will talk to you through the procedure. You will be given the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Surgery will be carried out under general anaesthetic, so you'll be asleep.

  • How to prepare icon plus

Your consultant will inform you how best to prepare for your surgery.

  • Afterwards icon plus

Your recovery time and hospital stay will be much shorter when compared to conventional spinal fusion surgery. Your will be given immediate pain relief to help relieve pain around the incision area.

You can expect to be cared for in hospital for two to three days following surgery, after which time you can begin rehabilitation at home and get back to your usual routine.

Our spinal fusion surgery gives you the chance to lead an active and productive life, and has a lower associated risk of additional surgery caused by the degeneration of adjacent discs.
