What is Dupuytren's contracture?
Dupuytren's contracture is a condition affecting the hand. It can be treated with injected medicine and sometimes surgery. The first symptoms are small, fluid-filled lumps under the skin in the palm of the hand. These contain collagen, a type of protein.
As the protein builds, a rope-like cord develops and stretches from the palm to a finger. As the cord tightens, it becomes harder to extend the finger and it loses function. The ring and little fingers are most often affected.

What treatments are available for Dupuytren's contracture? icon plus
Dupuytren's disease can often be treated with enzyme injections. This is injected directly into the cord to help dissolve it. The cord should break down in 72 hours. Your doctor will then extend the finger to break the cord under local anaesthetic.
Needle fasciotomy (or fasciectomy) is another option. Here, a needle is inserted into your palm to cut the collagen cord. This will release your fingers and help to restore function. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. In severe cases, open fasciotomy is recommended. Here, a surgical blade is used to cut the cord in several places, to ensure finger release. -
How to prepare for your procedure icon plus
Your consultant will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you might have. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you. -
After your procedure icon plus
You may need two more injections if the cord didn’t dissolve first time. Our hand therapy team will work with you to help you regain movement in your finger. Needle fasciotomies are usually successful procedures. However, there has been reported return of Dupuytren's contracture after three years in around 60% of people. In this case, your consultant may suggest surgery.
