Dilation and curettage

D&C

If you require dilation and curettage (D&C), our gynaecology experts can help to diagnose your condition and treat you

About

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure that cleans the lining of a female's womb. It can be necessary to remove tissue on the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion, or to treat abnormal uterine bleeding. Your gynaecologist can also diagnose conditions such as polyps, fibroids and uterine cancer.

Need to know

  • What happens icon plus

For this procedure you will likely be placed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon may then follow these steps during surgery: - A speculum (medical tool for investigating orifices) is slowly inserted into your vagina. This will allow a greater inspection of your cervix - Slightly thicker rods will be moved into the vagina to dilate the cervix, until it is opened - The rods are removed. A different spoon shaped instrument is then inserted into your vagina. - This instrument has a sharp edge or suction device that is used to remove uterine tissue
  • How to prepare icon plus

Your consultant will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. They may recommend: - Limiting food and drink intake in the period before surgery - To ensure you have a friend a family member who can take you home after the procedure
  • Afterwards icon plus

After the procedure your consultant will advise on when you can get back to your usual routine. The recovery process immediately after D&C may include: - Staying in hospital for a few hours for observation - You may experience slight cramping or mild bleeding from cervix for a few days - You can take pain-relief medication such as ibuprofen if you experience discomfort - Your consultant will discuss followup appointments with you
