What happens icon plus
The procedures performed using a da Vinci robot, are the same as conventional surgery using surgical laproscopic instruments. The surgeon however uses a special console, with enhanced visual equipment, to control a set of robotic arms that manipulate the laparoscopic equipment. Using a robot to perform the same actions of a surgeons hands in conventional surgery, allows the surgeon to perform more precise and intricate movements, as the robotic arms can perform 360 degree movement and hinge in a way a surgeons hands can't. -
How to prepare icon plus
Your consultant will let you know exactly how to prepare, depending on the treatment you're having. If you're having general anaesthetic, your consultant will tell you how long you should avoid eating and drinking leading up to the procedure. Before the procedure you might have a CT scan to generate an image of the area to be operated on. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you. -
Afterwards icon plus
With robotic surgery you generally have a faster recovery time than you would with traditional surgery. This means you'll have a shorter hospital stay. You might feel some pain and discomfort after your procedure. This will depend on the type of surgery you've had. If you do feel any pain you'll be prescribed pain relief medication. Your consultant will let you know exactly what you can expect after your procedure. They'll also let you know when you can get back to your usual routine, including work and exercise.
