About Hughes syndrome

If you have Hughes syndrome, also known as antiphospholipid syndrome, you are at increased risk of developing blood clots. This in turn makes you more susceptible to a heart attack or stroke.

Blood clots also increase the risk of a miscarriage in pregnant women. HCA UK can screen test for the presence of the condition.

Need to know

  • What happen during the screening test? icon plus

    Your consultant will take a small sample of your blood from a vein in your arm. Your arm is swabbed with a disinfectant wipe before the blood is taken using a very thin needle. You may feel a slight prick as the needle is inserted into your arm. The whole procedure takes less than 5 minutes.

  • How to prepare icon plus

    No special preparation is required for this procedure. However, you may find it easier if you wear a short-sleeved shirt or top.

  • After the blood test icon plus

    You'll be able to return to normal activities after your blood is taken.
