About reproductive immunology
The Lister Fertility Clinic's reproductive immunology team, led by Dr Yau Thum, has been exploring the relationship between the immune system and reproductive challenges since 2003. If you've had recurrent miscarriages or many unsuccessful attempts at IVF, your consultant may suggest the NK (natural killer) blood test to help determine if an overactive immune system is affecting your ability to get pregnant.
We don't offer this test to people having IVF for the first time, you must have a history of particular reproductive challenges or have a pre-existing autoimmune condition such as lupus or Crohn's disease. Depending on your results, your consultant might suggest treatment in the form of oral medication to suppress your immune system, an infusion of purified antibodies from blood donors or a fat emulsion infusion of soya bean oil, egg yolk, glycerin and water.
