About

An MR proctogram is a specialist examination which evaluates the pelvic floor muscles and the relationship between the bladder, vagina (for women) and rectum.

Muscle function is tested during the scanning procedure. There are no side effects from the examination.

Need to know

  • What happens during the scan? icon plus

    Once your rectum is empty you will be taken into the MRI scan room and asked to lie on a table on your side. Rectal jelly is inserted into your rectum, which you must retain. Your body will then be placed feet first into the MRI scanner so that images of your pelvis can be obtained. To recreate a bowel movement, you will be told to push out the jelly.

    This may be repeated several times. If you can not expel the jelly you will be asked to go to the toilet to do so before returning to the scanner for more imaging. The scan will last between twenty and thirty minutes, depending on if you need the toilet break.

  • How to prepare icon plus

    You will need to take an enema to empty your bowels and cleanse the lower part of your bowel before the scan can begin. Your consultant will tell you how best to prepare for this.

  • After your scan icon plus

    At the end of the scan you may change and leave when you are ready. There are no restrictions on returning to normal activity immediately afterwards. The images taken during the scan are carefully studied by your consultant who will produce a detailed report. You will have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results and decide on the best course of treatment, if necessary.
