About
A functional MRI scan (fMRI) uses a magnetic field to take pictures of the insides of your body. Unlike a normal MRI, it can show which parts of your brain are activated during speech, movement and remembering. It's often used to find out the feasibility of resecting (cutting out) certain tumours.

What happens icon plus
When you arrive at one of our MRI departments, we'll provide you with a robe to change into. We'll then take you to an MRI room where your consultant radiographer will explain the scan to you. When you're ready to begin, they'll ask you to lie down on a bed before moving it into the scanner. Your consultant radiographer will then go into a control room and start the fMRI scan. They may ask you to perform certain movements during the scan. This is so they can take images of your brain activity. An fMRI can take up to two hours. You might hear a loud knocking sound during it but we'll provide you with protective earbuds beforehand. -
How to prepare icon plus
There isn't any special preparation involved for an fMRI scan. It can take up to two hours and you'll be able to home straight after. -
Afterwards icon plus
After your scan, our consultant radiographer will analyse the results. They'll send their findings to your HCA GP or consultant who'll explain the results to you. They'll also let you know if you need any further tests or treatments.
