With more than 1,400 deliveries a year, we put women at the centre of their own maternity experience, offering both midwife-led and consultant-led care, and the full range of birthing options to enable you to develop your own birth plan. 

Specialist care is provided in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and we offer a range of services to complement your antenatal and postnatal care.

Labour and delivery

We have five fully equipped labour and delivery rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms for the privacy and comfort of you and your birth partner. Rooms are equipped with birthing balls and mats for adopting alternative birthing positions. Bluetooth speakers are available in each to allow you the option of your choice of music, and an oil diffuser for you to bring your choice of scent if you wish. 

All necessary safety monitoring equipment is available for you and your baby during your labour and post birth, and amenities such as TV, WIFI, in-house telephone and 24/7 room service.  

Water birth room

We have a beautiful dedicated water birth room, with a state-of-the-art birthing pool with built-in music and lighting to suit your mood and the ambiance you wish to create for your labour and birth.


We are still doing everything we can to support you to have the birthing experience you would like during this time, whilst keeping you as safe as possible. To manage the risk of transmission, we require a negative COVID-19 result within the 72 hours prior to your admission if you would like to have a water birth or use our pool during your labour.

Pain relief – epidural

We understand pregnancy and the process of giving birth is different for every mother. This is why, at The Portland Hospital, we provide various pain relief options to suit individual needs. 

Rest assured you are in the care of dedicated staff committed to helping you develop strategies to cope with labour.
 

Physiotherapy for pregnancy

The Women’s Health Physiotherapy Unit at The Portland Hospital offers highly-specialised, one-to-one assessment and treatment for a variety of conditions, including musculoskeletal, bladder, bowel and pelvic problems, to help you through your pregnancy.


The team are here to help you through your pregnancy and beyond. Our team are also able to provide expert advice on the best ways to stay mobile and active after birth.

Emergency theatres

With safety always at the forefront of our care, we have a dedicated emergency theatre on the labour ward, within metres of each labour room, meaning no delays in transfer to theatre, if required. The Resident Consultant Anaesthetist is present on labour ward 24/7 and the theatre team are on stand-by 24/7 should any woman need to be transferred to theatre for birth or any other procedure. 


Enhanced Maternal Critical Care Unit

Enhanced maternal critical care is available to all women who require more intensive observation, treatment and care before, during or after delivery. Located on-site on the labour ward, The Enhanced Maternal Critical Care Unit is supported 24 hours a day by a dedicated on-site Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetist and is equipped with specialist monitoring for both mother and baby.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Should your baby require it, we provide emergency care to babies delivered from 28 weeks’ gestation and onwards in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As they grow, babies move out of the NICU and into our Special Care Baby Unit if they still require specialist care. Both specialist units have very high levels of nursing to care for all of your baby’s needs, and this service is overseen 24 hours a day by our specialist consultant neonatologists. 

We encourage parents to visit their baby as often as they like, and will go to every possible length to support you with accommodation to help make this time a little easier for you. If your baby does require intensive care, we ask parents to have a screening before entering either unit to avoid transmission of COVID-19.
 

Lodging

Parents who wish to are able to stay throughout the duration of their baby’s admission in the Neonatal Unit in our on-site lodging facilities.

Transitional care 

The Portland's Transitional Care Unit (TCU) allows babies who need treatment or monitoring that exceeds standard routine care for a newborn to be cared for by our consultant, midwifery and neonatal teams on the postnatal ward. 

Our nursery (subject to safety measures and guidelines)

Our 24-hour nursery is on the same floor as the postnatal rooms and is run by our highly-experienced nursery nurses. They work closely with our midwives and are available to offer you practical lessons, such as changing your baby's nappies and bathing them.

Should you wish to rest for any period, your baby can be looked after in the nursery and be brought back to you when you feel more energised. Be assured, only parents are allowed to enter the nursery if their baby is in there. Please note that this isn’t available at the moment due to COVID-19 restrictions.
