Paediatric knee and ligament injuries

Specialist knee and ligament treatment for children and adolescents

The Portland Hospital has world renowned sub-specialty experts in the field of knee and ligament injuries for children and young people.

About knee and ligament injuries

Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which helps stabilise the knee joint, can cause serious long-term damage. ACL injuries most commonly occur during sports that involve sudden and dynamic movement including football, skiing, netball, and rugby. Children are particularly at risk when the sport involves rapid starting and stopping or sudden changes in direction.

Our paediatric experts at The Portland Hospital can diagnose and advise on treatment options for ligament injuries including ACL repair and ACL reconstruction. Rest-assured that our expert-consultants are leaders in this field of complex surgery.

In addition to initial treatment, the long-term recovery of the young people we treat is of the utmost importance to us, which is why we also offer a rehabilitation programme as a treatment option. This involves innovative physiotherapy techniques to help aid movement, and slowly build up strength and muscle around the ligament that has been operated on.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair

ACL injuries are becoming increasingly common in children and young people, as a result of more extreme sports injuries and lifestyle changes.

Our world-class consultants offer a range of different surgical options, including both ACL repair using the internal brace technique and  ACL reconstruction. These innovative procedures can rapidly reduce recovery time, and help many young people get back to playing the activities and sports they are passionate about.

The consultants at The Portland Hospital are world-leading knee and sports injury specialists. Their combined expertise and work in injury-prevention is helping to address the increase in knee ligament injuries in children.
