One-stop Cardiac Referral Unit launches

Opened in March 2019, the one-stop referral unit at the Wellington Hospital in St John’s Wood, London, offers same day assessment by the consultant cardiac team, with direct access into the hospital’s Cardiac Centre of Excellence.

Patients presenting to their GP with concerns or symptoms relating to suspected heart conditions can now benefit from specialist assessment and diagnosis at the Wellington Hospital’s new Cardiac Referral Unit, part of their Cardiac Centre of Excellence.

The unit brings together the sub-specialist expertise of onsite cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and radiographers to provide earlier diagnosis and management of cardiac conditions.

Patients benefit from a same-day appointment with a member of the consultant cardiac team, as well as direct access into the hospital’s Cardiac Centre of Excellence, a specialist centre for the management of patients with complex cardiac conditions.

The Centre has recently invested in a brand new, state-of-the-art hybrid catheter laboratory-theatre, which combines the ability to undertake transcatheter procedures with major surgery; significantly reducing the risk involved in switching percutaneous procedures to surgery during an emergency. It also allows interventional cardiologists to undertake multiple transcatheter procedures consecutively. The investment is part of the Centre’s wider research and investment strategy to improve clinical outcomes and workflow efficiency using the latest technology and cutting-edge techniques

The Cardiac Referral Unit is open Monday – Friday from 8.00am - 8.00pm and Saturday from 8.00am - 1.00pm.
