HCA appoints Mr Graham Venn as Chief Medical Officer

HCA International Limited (HCA) is delighted to announce the recent appointment of Mr Graham Erskine Venn, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, as its first Chief Medical Officer across the group of hospitals in the UK.

Mr Venn, is a past Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a past President of the Cardiothoracic Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has led the Department of Cardiac Surgical Research in the Rayne Institute, St Thomas’ Hospital since 1989, which has specialised research interests in the protection of the heart and other major organs during open heart surgery.

Mr Venn will chair a new group-wide clinical and patient safety Quality Board. This will coordinate HCA hospitals’ learning and validate new approaches. The Board will ensure clinicians contribute to how care is organised and that the optimal outcome data is being gathered. This leadership across the HCA group of hospitals will mean a shared approach to measuring and defining quality of healthcare.

Among the initiatives already underway are a new infection control standard across all hospitals, new electronic health records and the rollout of automated patient vital sign monitoring – all designed to reduce errors and risks of patient harm.

Mr Venn brings with him a highly impressive and respected medical background and will contribute to HCA’s fundamental aim - to ensure patients benefit from best medical practice and the consistent application of latest clinical standards.

Graham Venn, new Chief Medical Officer for HCA International, said: “Great patient care is achieved when teams works together closely, combining all medical and non-medical components of care to provide a timely, holistic approach to each and every patient at all times. This aim reflects our aspirations in excellence for all our patients.

Michael Neeb, President and CEO, HCA International, said: “Graham Venn is a highly respected Cardiothoracic Surgeon and brings with him an exceptional wealth of experience and a highly successful medical career to take on this appointment. This is a significant responsibility and one that I am confident Graham will fulfil with complete dedication and energy. I look forward to working with Graham alongside our Medical Advisory Committees to advance our quality agenda.”
