Linseys hypnobirth patient story

First-time mum Linsey couldn't wait to meet her new baby. But like many women, she was worried about the thought of going through labour.

Linseys hypnobirthing experience

The hypnobirthing experience made me realise that I can do anything I put my mind to.
Linsey

‘When I first found out I was pregnant, I was nervous about the birth,’ Linsey admits. After starting maternity care at The Portland Hospital, she was told about the range of antenatal classes available. One that particularly stood out was hypnobirthing. Hypnobirthing is a technique designed to provide a calm and comfortable birthing experience. It involves practices such as controlled breathing, visualisations and deep relaxation.

When Linsey and her husband Adam arrived at The Portland Hospital for their class, they were welcomed by hypnobirthing coach, Teresa Walsh. 'She had a very warm and caring way about her and instantly made us feel relaxed,' says Linsey. The couple continued to practice hypnobirthing techniques at home. After a week, they both started to feel calmer. Adam even found himself feeling less stressed about work.

A few weeks later, Linsey woke up feeling that something could be happening. When she began to feel regular contractions, she called her midwife and the couple were told to make their way to the Portland. Linsey started using her hypnobirthing techniques right away. ‘I was rocking my body through each surge and using my visualisation of a hot air balloon rising into the sky.’ Her midwife checked her into the ward and focused on making Linsey as comfortable as possible. ‘I was asked if I wanted gas and air, but I didn't like the thought of not being in control,’ says Linsey.

Linsey's birthing plan went exactly as she had hoped, and the couple welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world. 'Adam cut the cord and we both felt an unbelievable rush of love,' she remembers. ‘I have an inner strength that I didn't realise I had until then. I will forever be encouraging women to try hypnobirthing. I believe if I can do it, anyone can!’

To this day, I feel so proud of myself for giving birth with no pain relief. It's my biggest achievement.’
