The Childrens Knee Clinic

The Children’s Knee Clinic at The Portland Hospital is a specialist group of consultants who focus on the diagnosis and management of knee ligament injuries in children and adolescents.

The team is led by Professor Adrian Wilson, who specialises in the treatment and management of ligament injuries in children, in particular to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).  As children’s bones and ligaments are developing, the risk of damage is greater than in adults.

Professor Wilson is widely respected around the world for being the first surgeon to carry out anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) internal brace repair for sports injuries in children. He has the most international experience in ACL repair with the internal brace technique in children and speaks frequently at conferences and courses about his results and experience. This new minimally invasive surgery has been found to be particularly successful in enabling children to return to their normal activities in the shortest time possible.  This is due to a more rapid recovery when compared with traditional ACL surgery, and is transforming the treatment of this common injury.

The Children’s Knee Clinic specialises in this complex area of surgery and involves a team including Professor Adrian Wilson, Mr Paul Trikha and Mr Raghbir Khakha.

There are a small number of surgeons in the UK and internationally who able to perform these unique ligament repair techniques successfully and consistently, and very few groups with the combined expertise of The Children’s Knee Clinic.   The team are supported by Mr Ben Wilde, a specialist physiotherapist, who has spearheaded the design of both a preventative warm up protocol and post-operative rehabilitation programme for patients.

The Children’s Knee Clinic has produced evidence for their ligament repair procedure that is altering the thinking of the orthopaedic community. Their methods are being touted as a future best-practice approach for all knee ligament injuries in the young.
