The latest MS treatment including stem cell transplantation (AHSCT)

November 2018 patient event

In November 2018, London Bridge Hospital hosted an MS patient information morning exploring developments in the treatment of MS and especially Autologous Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. Members of our multi-disciplinary team took part.

Dr Majid Kazmi, Consultant Haematologist and one of the leaders in stem cell transplantation in UK, provided insight into how stem cell transplantation for MS works. He described which patients would be most suitable and results of the recent MIST trial, showing that transplantation can halt the progression of MS – with over 70% achieving remission and ongoing stability with No Evidence of Disease Activity (NEDA).

Patient experience of AHSCT

Clearly patients who have been through AHSCT are best placed to share their lived experiences, the challenges and expectations; the setbacks and progress; and ultimately of how truly life changing stem cell transplantation can be.

We were therefore fortunate that two London Bridge Hospital patient stories brought to life what was involved, their experience of chemotherapy to blast the body’s immune system, and the prolonged period of treatment including isolation.
