Pre-participation fitness evaluation

This evaluation will establish your overall health status and detect medical conditions or lifestyle choices that might predispose you to injury, or limit your ability to perform at your best.

Led by sport and exercise medicine consultants, this evaluation is particularly suitable for those:
1. Returning from injury or illness and wanting to train again
2. Wishing to build up to a full training programme
3. Wishing to optimise recovery following an illness.

Ideally, the assessment should be completed a few weeks before starting a physical activity regime, allowing enough time to address any concerns that may be identified. These assessments should occur annually, unless there’s a reason to repeat it earlier, for example to assess the effect of a medical intervention or lifestyle change.
The evaluation process is tailored to each individual. Our team of specialists take into account age, injury history and health behaviours specific to any sport undertaken and level of participation.

Pre-appointment medical questionnaire

An in-depth questionnaire will be sent to you in advance of the scheduled appointment. This will set the scene for the appointment with the Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) consultant.

Consultation

You will spend up to one hour with one of our consultants, who will carry out an in-depth review of your medical history and conduct a clinical examination. This will highlight any potential concerns that may need further scrutiny. Further diagnostic tests will be dictated by the outcome of this consultation.

Physical assessment

During this part of the screen, you will undergo a number of tests designed to assess your physical well-being and fitness.

Laboratory tests

A blood test will show a profile including a full blood count, kidney, liver and thyroid function and vitamin D levels. A urine analysis will add to the blood test results. Additional tests may be requested if the individual circumstances indicate they are necessary.

Results

You will receive a full report of assessments, highlighting any potential implications on health and performance along with recommendations on how to ideally resolve them.
