Overview

The Wellington Hospital cardiac unit is one of the largest specialist private cardiac units in the UK, and an HCA centre of excellence. Some of the nation’s most distinguished cardiologists and cardiac surgeons lead its specialist medical teams, performing ground-breaking procedures every day such as trans-catheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI) and closure of ASD/PFO for patients at risk of stroke. We’re equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a new ‘hybrid’ catheter lab and theatre and a dedicated cardiac catheter and electrophysiological lab. We also have a full respiratory function laboratory to assess sleep and breathing studies, and the unit is supported by two adult intensive care units. All of our patients will receive seamless care in a supportive environment. Our multi-disciplinary team works between invasive and non-invasive cardiology.

Expertise

Our cardiac surgeons are among the world's best, offering the most advanced cardiac treatments and diagnostic procedures. Whether your heart problem is complex or routine, we offer the highest levels of expert care.

  • Heart valve surgery

    Need to know

Heart valves are non-return, one-way valves within the heart designed so that the blood flows one way through the system. They can fail by narrowing (obstructing forward flow) or by tearing (resulting in a leak of blood backwards).

  • Pacemakers and defibrillators

    Need to know

A pacemaker or defibrillator can regulate your heartbeat if you have a condition that makes your heart beat too slow or too fast. If you have heart failure, it can improve the pumping of your heart. They are small electrical devices implanted just below your collarbone, usually on the left side.

  • Catheter ablation therapy for arrhythmia

    Need to know

Ablation therapy can correct a range of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia), including atrial fibrillation. These conditions are caused by abnormal electric signals sent by the heart muscle. Radiofrequency energy or freezing (cryoablation) is used to destroy the heart tissue that's causing the abnormal...

  • Coronary angioplasty

    Need to know

Angioplasty helps improve the blood flow in your heart by widening narrowed or blocked arteries using a balloon and stent (a small wire tube). It can help to relieve angina symptoms and can also be used as an emergency treatment if you've had a heart attack.

  • Septal myectomy

    Need to know

HCM is an inherited condition where the heart muscle (myocardium) becomes abnormally thick, so it's harder for your heart to pump blood. In some patients, the thickening causes a significant obstruction to the blood leaving the heart. Whilst this can normally be controlled with tablets, surgery is sometimes...

  • Electrical cardioversion

    Need to know

A cardioversion is a quick procedure that involves giving your heart a controlled electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat. If you have a heart condition, such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, a cardioversion can correct this.

Diagnostics

Radiographic diagnostics

Our cutting-edge radiographic diagnostics include two MRI scanners and support for cardiac imaging, high definition CT scans, ultrasound and Digital X-ray.

Echocardiography

Echocardiography exams with routine spectral and colour Doppler examinations for valve and structural abnormalities, hypertension and congenital heart disease.

Diagnostic Electrophysiology EP

In our new, state-of-the-art electrophysiology labs, we offer the latest diagnostic tests for irregular heart rhythms.

Non-invasive cardiac diagnostics

We also offer a range of non invasive cardiac diagnostics including exercise stress echocardiography, ambulatory ECG and blood-pressure monitoring and internal loop monitoring.

Digital diagnostics

We offer the latest digital diagnostics, including 3D transthoracic and TOE echocardiography for left ventricular function and valvular assessment.

Exercise stress testing echocardiography

We can monitor blood pressure and heart condition through exercise on a treadmill or bicycle. We also conduct ambulatory heart stress testing for complete peace of mind.
