John Watkinson qualified from the Royal Free Hospital, University of London (UL) and trained in ENT and Head and Neck and Plastic Surgery at Guy’s Hospital and the Royal Marsden. From 1992 - 2017, he was a consultant Head and Neck and Thyroid surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Birmingham NHS Trust. He has published on all aspects of Head and Neck surgery; organised the Birmingham Head and Neck course for ten years, and is the Chief Editor of Stell and Maran. He edited the Plastic Surgery section of the last published Scott Brown (2007) and is the new Chief Editor (2018). He was the President of British Association of Head & Neck Oncologists (BAHNO); (2009-2011). He was on the National Executive of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS) and was their President (2011-2013). He was awarded a Hunterian Professorship for 2009 - 2011 from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was the Chair of the Semon Committee (UCL; 2013 – 2017) and President of the RSM Section of Laryngology (2014- 2015)
