    Professor Mughal qualified in 1977 from the University of Manchester and underwent his surgical training in the North West. He was a consultant surgeon in the North West from 1989 to 2011 when moved to UCLH in February 2011 as Head of UGI Services.

    Professor Mughal has been involved in the reconfiguration of cancer services, having led the centralisation of oesophagogastric cancer services in Lancashire and South Cumbria in 2009 and in North Central and North East London in 2015.

    Professor Mughal has served as Regional Specialty Advisor in General Surgery for the North West, as a member of the SAC in General Surgery, a member on the panel of examiners for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in General Surgery, as a council member for the Association of Upper GI Surgeons and as a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was appointed a member of the Appraisal Committee of NICE at its inception in 1999 and served until 2006. He is currently a member of the Interim Review Mechanism Panel of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
