Professor Charles Claoué is Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Queen"s Hospital, BHR University Hospitals NHS Trust, London, and in independent practice.
He specialises in advanced and complex cataract surgery, intraocular lens design, corneal transplantation and treatments (including DMEK and collagen cross-linking/C3R), corneal and lens refractive surgery (including PRELEX) and medico-legal aspects of ophthalmology.
Professor Claoué trained at the University of Cambridge, St. Thomas" and Moorfields Eye Hospitals, and holds academic links to the Universities of London, Pretoria, Ulster and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was recently Secretary of the UKISCRS and was formerly Chairman of the UKISCRS EUREQUO committee and Secretary of the British Society for Refractive Surgery. He is Liveryman of the Society of Apothecaries and Freeman of The City of London.
He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles as well as book chapters and edited an early text-book on refractive surgery. He was the first surgeon to describe PRELEX (PREsbyopic Lens EXchange) and is developing an IOL to help patients with end-stage ARMD. Outside of medicine, his interests include classic cars, history and farming. -
