    Professor Carmichael is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon. She has an extensive experience in providing a dedicated specialist Breast Service for screen detected and symptomatic cancers in a multidisciplinary setting since 2004. Prof Carmichael continually updates her surgical skills and has recently attended USA for a fellowship to enhance her skills for lipomedelling and breast reconstruction.

    Prof Carmichael trained at the Breast Units of St Thomas’ Hospital London and Edinburgh and gained experience in the management of genetic breast cancer as a travelling Fellow in Philadelphia, USA. She graduated with 7 gold medals for academic excellence and was recipient of the Best Graduate Award.

    Prof. Carmichael has a strong academic background; she is a the Lead Faculty for the TrACE (Training & Assessment in the Clinical Environment) course and Training the Trainer courses conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, UK. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of Aston, an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and Edinburgh. She is a Senior Examiner for the Medical School and MRCS examination.

    Prof Carmichael is a recognised surgical trainer and has extensive experience in training undergraduate medical, nursing, radiography and pharmacy students in the management of breast disease.

    Professor Carmichael is committed and dedicated to research to improve the outcome of women with breast cancer. She is involved in many research projects as a lead as developed a physical activity after breast cancer booklet and has been involved in community projects organised by Dudley council to raise awareness to attend for breast screening.
