Mr Karydis graduated from the medical school of the University of Athens, Greece in 2003 and qualified in general surgery in 2011, following the completion of his research degree (PhD). He then specialised in the UK in liver, pancreatic and transplant surgery at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne and Guy's and St Thomas' in London. He joined the transplant team at Guy's Hospital as a consultant in 2014.

In 2016, he was awarded an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at King's College London and has an active research portfolio in vascular access and pancreas transplantation. He performs kidney and pancreas transplantation and also advanced vascular access and peritoneal dialysis procedures in patients with end-stage kidney failure. He also performs minimally invasive ("keyhole") donor nephrectomies in people donating a kidney to a relative or friend. His clinical consultations include assessment for kidney donation and kidney transplantation, post-donation and post-transplant follow-up, assessment for vascular access for haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
