    Mr James Smellie trained at Cambridge as an undergraduate and completed clinical training at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He gained parallel medical certification in the USA and worked in trauma at the Medical College of Virginia. He then completed surgical training in London, including time in Lille, France and returning to the USA at the Mayo clinic and Ann Arbor.

    Mr Smellie gained specialist certification in 1999 having sat the first exit exam in endocrine specialist general surgery. He was appointed to his current post in July 2000 as consultant surgeon at the Chelsea and Westminster NHS foundation trust. He has been at the forefront of adopting and disseminating new technologies in surgery such as neuromonitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgery; minimal incision neck surgery, application of facelift-derived cosmesis in parotid surgery and also metabolic surgery such as laparoscopic gastric band surgery for type II diabetes.

    He has sat on the executive of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid surgeons and has convened the international annual meeting of this association. He is heavily involved in the training of surgeons and is regional speciality programme director.

    Mr Smellie has published articles in academic peer reviewed journals about endocrine, parathyroid and thyroid surgery and has published laboratory derived data related to antibody directed radiotherapy in xenograft models as well as presenting a thesis for a doctorate to Cambridge University. He has also published a series of cosmetic incision parotid operations.
