    Mr Niall Patton MB ChB, MD, FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthamologist, Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. He is also Director of the Manchester Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program for International Ophthalmologists from around the world, who visit Manchester Royal Eye Hospital to gain high level surgical and clinical expertise in the management of retinal disease. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 1996. He completed his ophthalmic surgical training at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh. In addition, he has undertaken four years of specialist Vitreoretinal surgical fellowship training at the Lions Eye Institute, Western Australia, Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh, Tennant Eye Institute, Glasgow and Moorfield's Eye Hospital, London. He was appointed as a Consultant at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2008. He is an Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow for the FRCS Ophthalmology Exam His surgical expertise encompasses all aspects of cataract and vitreoretinal surgery and he is at the forefront of the latest micro-incisional vitreoretinal techniques such as 23G, 25G and 27G microvitrectomy. He is also accredited as a femto-second laser cataract surgeon and regularly manages complex cataract surgery that is not amenable to surgery elsewhere. He has particular expertise in the management of vitreal floaters, macular hole surgery, retinal detachment surgery, epiretinal membrane surgery, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration. He runs a very busy private practice including expert evidence for medico-legal work, and has an international reputation in the surgical management of vitreal floaters, seeing patients regularly from overseas with this distressing condition. In addition to his clinical workload, Mr Patton undertakes important research in retinal conditions and has published extensively in retinal disease. He holds a doctorate (MD) from the University of Manchester. He has spoken at national and international ophthalmology meetings, including the United States, Australia, and Europe. In addition to 53 peer-reviewed publications in ophthalmic journals, he has also co-authored a chapter of a textbook and has served as a reviewer for major international ophthalmology journals, including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology & Journal of Applied Physiology. He has also served as a grant reviewer for the Wellcome Trust.
