During his training in Plastic Surgery, Mr Akhtar also developed an interest in hand surgery, due to the intricate anatomical nature and complex functional aspect of the field. He therefore undertook a Hand Surgery fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby as well as a National interface Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit. In order to gain a broader understanding of nerve conditions and microsurgery he has also undertaken a visiting fellowship to Siri Raj Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, which is an advanced centre for surgery in the Far East. During a Consultancy post in Durham, Mr Akhtar acquired an interest in cosmetic surgery.

At Durham he treated a broad number of conditions including treating patients requiring breast reconstruction, cosmetic procedures, patients with facial skin cancer and hand injuries. He then moved to Wrightington Hospital as a Consultant where he predominately specialises in hand surgery but also continues to perform a broad range of plastic surgery procedures.
