After specialist colorectal training and a research MD at the University Hospital of Leicester, Sajal Rai carried out laparoscopic training, as a fellow, under the acclaimed Mr Tony Dixon at Bristol. He joined Stepping Hill Hospital in 2010 as a consultant general and colorectal surgeon. In this role, Mr Rai specialises in treating intestinal problems with laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. His practice focuses on the colon and rectum but his laparoscopic skills are also useful in general gastroenterology conditions e.g. gallstones and hernias. The majority of his patients with bowel cancer or benign conditions e.g. inflammatory bowel disease or diverticular disease are treated laparoscopically. Mr Rai now trains other NHS surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He also launched the Enhanced Recovery Programme which uses planned nutrition and mobilisation to give a better experience, better outcome and earlier discharge (with fewer complications) to patients having major colorectal surgery in the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.
