    Dr Joel Mawdsley is a Consultant Gastroenterologist based in the internationally respected Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS trust where he is joint clinical lead. In this role his focus is on delivering first class care to his patients with service innovation and research driven practice. Prior to this, he was an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College and a Consultant at West Middlesex University Hospital where he was training lead for endoscopy. He specialises in luminal gastroenterology, endoscopy (having been an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopist) and inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Mawdsley studied pre-cliniclal medicne at Queens College Cambridge where he received a first-class honours degree in medical studies and won the Max Bull Prize for medicine. He then studied clinical medicine at St Bart’s and the Royal London hospitals. He has a wide experience in gastroenterology having been a registrar in the North West Thames region with periods of training at Imperial College Healthcare and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He was a clinical research fellow at the Royal London from 2005-2007 where he completed a Doctorate of Medicine on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, publishing several high impact papers. He has maintained an active research interest being involved in clinical research studies in IBD and with a particular interest in the brain-gut axis.

    Between 2014-2017 he was a colonoscopist in the National Bowel Cancer Screening program, having passed a rigorous assessment process and being continually audited to Key Performance indicators. In his role as training lead in endoscopy at West Middlesex Hospital he was responsible for ensuring high quality training for junior doctors to ensure a first-class endoscopic experience for his patients.

    Dr Mawdsley is active in medical education having been invited to take up roles in regional and national educational societies. He is currently president elect of the Gastroenterology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the organising committee of the London IBD forum.
