    Vijay Hajela studied medicine at the university of Newcastle Upon Tyne, qualifying in 1990. He worked in Newcastle, Sheffield and then in Auckland, New Zealand, before moving to London and the South East of England to complete his training in rheumatology and general internal medicine.

    In February 2000 he started his first Consultant post at University Hospital Lewisham. Between 2000 and 2010 he held various positions including Clinical Lead for Rheumatology, Chair of the Primary Care Musculoskeletal Panel and Director of Medical Education.

    He moved to Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH) NHS in March 2010. Since joining BSUH he has been clinical lead for rheumatology and deputy and acting chief of medicine.
    Dr Hajela was Regional Chair of the British Society for Rheumatology from 2014-17. He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians PACES exam since 2005 and has twice hosted the exam in Brighton.
    He is still involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has given lectures in the field of rheumatology and service provision at numerous regional and national meetings.
