Dr Emma Roisin Woodward studied medicine at the University of Cambridge. Whilst undertaking her medical studies, she achieved a PhD in hereditary cancer genetics, graduating in 1999 with MB BChir PhD. Following general adult medicine rotations in London, Lausanne and Belfast Dr Woodward achieved MRCP in 2003.

Knowing that she wished to pursue a career in hereditary cancer genetics Dr Woodward commenced Specialist Registrar Training in Clinical Genetics in the West Midlands. During this time Dr Woodward was awarded a prestigious NIHR Clinician Scientist Award where she studied the hereditary predisposition to renal cancer. Dr Emma Woodward achieved her CCT in Clinical Genetics in 2008 combining research with an honorary consultant position.

In 2015 Dr Woodward accepted a consultant position in the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Her clinical practice includes all aspects of hereditary cancer predisposition including the more common cancers such as breast, ovarian and bowel cancer, in addition to rarer cancers, for example, endocrine tumours and renal cancer. Dr Woodward is pursuing research projects in the hereditary aspects of thyroid cancers and work collaboratively on projects investigating hereditary aspects of breast cancer and also endocrine tumour predisposition. Dr Woodward has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications including both as first, senior and co-author.

She is the current Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee for the British Society of Genetic Medicine and, in 2016, was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
