Dr Kevin Shields is a Consultant Neurologists, with particular specialism in the management of headache disorders. Dr Shields has an NHS base at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Whittington Hospital. He is one of the few neurologists who is also qualified in neurophysiology, a separate diagnostic specialism that studies the electrical cavity of the nervous system.
He qualified first in his class at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1997 and was awarded the Hudson Gold medal. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 1999, before moving to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London to begin neurology training. While there, he trained for several years under the supervision of Professor Peter J Goadsby, one of the world's leading experts in headache disorder. Dr Shields was awarded a PhD for his research into mechanisms of pain transmission in headache from the University of London in 2005. He received the Sir Charles Symonds Prize from the Association of Neurologists and the Lord Adrian Prize from the British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology for his research. Dr Shields has also been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and books.
