    David Thomson is an academic clinical oncologist at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, who specialises in the treatment of head and neck cancer.

    He qualified from Oxford Medical School in 2004, with a First Class honours degree in Physiological Sciences and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree from Manchester University in 2015, including clinical research in proton beam therapy at the University of Pennsylvania.

    Dr Thomson is Chief Investigator for the UK phase 3 NIMRAD trial to investigate hypoxia modification with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (CRUK/13/006), and the UK phase 3 TORPEdO trial to investigate the use of proton beam therapy for oropharynx cancer (CRUK/18/010).

    He is Deputy Chair of the national CTRad Proton Beam Therapy Clinical Trial Group (2020-), member of NCRI Head and Neck Cancer Research Group (2017-), member of NHS national proton panel (2018-), served as clinical lead for NHS England policy development for proton therapy in head and neck cancer (2018-19) and is an Associate Senior Editor for the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (2020-).

    As head and neck clinical lead for Greater Manchester Cancer, Dr Thomson is passionate about improving the survival outcomes and long-term quality of life for patients with head and neck cancer.
