About

  • Biography icon plus

Dr Catherine Hood is a specialist in psychosexual medicine and can treat patients or couples with sexual or relationship problems both before and after treatment.

Psychosexual medicine addresses the physical and psychological aspects of sexual dysfunction, understanding that a sexual problem often arises from a complex mix of physiological processes and psychosocial influences. I work with individuals or couples to help bring the mind and body together. Patients gain understanding about the origin of their problem as well as practical and therapeutic interventions to help tackle it.

Dr Hood can help individuals with a wide variety of symptoms including painful sex, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and poor body image. The problems can be related to their cancer treatment or pre-existing.

Dr Hood has worked in the field of sexual health for fifteen years. She is an Associate Specialist at St George’s Hospital and runs two busy NHS psychosexual medicine clinics in London. She is also a member of the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine and sits on the IPM Council. She has been talking to LOC clients as part of the Living Well programme for the last three years.

Dr Hood qualified in medicine from the University of Oxford where she won several prizes for my studies. She subsequently lectured at Oxford Medical School in Communication Skills, based in Ethox, the Oxford Centre for Ethics and Communication in Healthcare, a post she held for nine years. Dr Hood continues to give frequent lectures in the UK and abroad.

She is also an experienced broadcaster and writer. She presented the popular series ‘A Girl’s Guide to 21st Century Sex’ for FIVE, was the Agony Aunt for GMTV’s LK Today (ITV1) and regularly appeared on ‘The Wright Stuff’ (FIVE). Previously she was the face of the ‘Discovery Health Channel’ and has contributed to several documentaries for Channel 4, BBC3 and FIVE. Dr Hood also has a weekly column in the Mirror and Sunday Mirror for eleven years and still regularly writes for many national magazines including ‘More’ and ‘Company’.
