    Stephen qualified from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in 1983. His orthopaedic training was at Charing Cross and St George's Hospital, London. He did his fellowship in Baltimore USA at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1995. He obtained the FRCSOrth examination in 1996 and was appointed as consultant at the Princess Royal Hospital in Sussex in 1997. He, along with colleagues set up a diabetic foot service and foot pain clinic. He has been involved with post graduate training including ATLS Course director, HEKSS Training Programme Director and FRCSOrth examiner. Within the British Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS), he was Chair of the Education Committee and President in 2014 and initiated both the BOFAS registrar teaching course which is delivered across the UK and wider afield as well as starting the BOFAS outcomes registry. He is National Subspecialty lead for the National Clinical Improvement project run by NHS England. He was on the Council of the British Orthopaedic Society until 2018.

    His clinical interests include foot and ankle surgery including trauma, ankle arthritis, ankle replacement, hind and midfoot problems.

    He has a wide range of publications in the basic sciences as well as clinical studies in topics to include ankle arthroscopy and impingement, hallux rigidus and on orthopaedic registries and outcome scoring. He is an Editor for Orthopaedics and Trauma and is a reviewer for several other journals to include the BJJ.
