Roger Williams is currently Professor of Hepatology and Director of the Institute of Hepatology, University College London. He is also Honorary Consultant Physician at University College London Hospitals. Before that he was Director of the world renowned Institute for Liver Studies at King's College Hospital which he established in 1972. Professor Williams is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and is the recipient of numerous honorary fellowships, awards and prizes. Most recently he was awarded the British Association for the Study of the Liver Lifetime Achievement Award (2003) and the American Society of Transplantation Wyeth Senior Achievement Award (2004). Professor Williams received a CBE for services to medicine in 1993. He is a Fellow of both King's College London and University College London.A member of numerous professional societies, Professor Williams has been president of the British Society of Gastroenterology, the British Association for the Study of the Liver, and the European Association for the Study of the Liver. He is Medical Director of the UK charity, the Foundation for Liver Research and. He serves on the editorial boards of a number of top peer reviewed journals and is a world-renowned lecturer.His main clinical and research interests are in liver transplantation. He was the first in the UK to use liver support devices in the treatment of patients with liver failure and has wide experience, with many publications in the areas of viral hepatitis, and the management of cirrhosis and its complications including hepatocellular carcinoma.
