Professor Mark McGurk
MD FRCS DLU FDS RCS
Head and Neck Cancers
Dentoalveolar surgery (Incl. wisdom teeth); salivary gland disease (Incl. stones and cancers); head and neck lumps
Professor Mark McGurk received his undergraduate dental degree from Sheffield University in 1976 and completed a medical degree in 1984. In 1991 he was appointed Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and in 1992 took up the Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Dental Institute at Guy's, King's College and St Thomas' Hospitals (formerly UMDS). Although he is trained in the full remit of maxillofacial surgery Professor McGurk's two main areas of interest are management of head and neck cancer and minimally invasive treatment of salivary gland disease including tumours. Professor McGurk has published extensively in the area of oral neoplasia and has pioneered the introduction of minimally invasive techniques to surgery in the head and neck region. He has led a European sentinel node trial, the aim of which is to reduce the incidence of neck surgery for tumours of the mouth. He has also championed simple low morbidity treatment for benign parotid tumours. The results of his work in both the management of head and neck cancer and salivary gland disease are published in medical literature.
